Grubhub Let Yorgos Lanthimos Cook for Quirky Super Bowl Debut

Created with Anomaly, the hyper-stylised Big Game spot is the first-ever for the brand and the 'Poor Things' and 'Bugonia' director, writes LBB's Ben Conway

"This February, one food delivery app will finally put their mouth where their money is."

This topsy-turvy reversal of a common phrase is just the start of the upcoming absurdity in Grubhub's first Super Bowl spot. Created by Anomaly, 'The Final Course' is directed by the Oscar-nominated Yorgos Lanthimos ('Bugonia', 'The Lobster', 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer') which is very often a guarantee of some strangeness.

Known for his off-kilter approach to cinematography, dark absurdist humour and penchant for stilted dialogue, the Greek auteur is expected to bring something a little different to the usual blockbuster Big Game ads. And the teaser released by Grubhub today confirms our suspicions.

In the 15-second promo, the camera pans across a long dining table, laden with mountains of colourful, sumptuous food. From the pristine table cloth to the crystal glassware and sparkling cutlery, the scene is set for the ostentatious vibrancy fans will remember from the production design and wacky characters of 'Poor Things'.

A waiter arrives with a gleaming, silver cloche and lifts the lid to reveal a mysterious 'final course' at this luxurious dinner party. A POV shot from the dish reveals a curious cast of characters, dressed in expectedly idiosyncratic outfits and tentatively peering down the lens.

To find out what this unidentified object might be, people will have to wait for the full ad to air on the Super Bowl broadcast February 8th.

Despite being his Super Bowl debut, Yorgos has experience in the world of advertising, having directed on commercial projects at the beginning of his career in the late '90s in his home nation, Greece. He was also a member of the creative team that designed the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

Keep up with everything Super Bowl LX here.
