How Rajasthan Became a Reminder of Why Travel Matters for Baliprod Films

The Baliprod Films team reflects on crafting the 'The Rituals of Ayurveda' campaign with the brief: 'spiritual, warm, timeless'

Why India Was Never Really a Question

The brief said "spiritual, warm, timeless." There was a single conversation about it and then we booked our tickets. Ayurveda comes from India, so if we wanted the campaign to feel authentic, we needed to go to the source.

That's something we think about a lot at Baliprod. The best locations aren't just beautiful. They carry a history, a culture and a feeling that's impossible to recreate somewhere else. We wanted access to places, people and traditions that felt real, not recreated. India gave us that immediately. There are certain details, textures and moments you simply can't build on a set or find somewhere else.

Building the Team on the Ground

This shoot took us through Rajasthan, with Jaipur as our base for much of the production. Like a lot of jobs, it looked straightforward on paper. In reality it was weeks of logistics, permits, scouting, location negotiations and solving problems that only appear once you're actually on the ground.

Fortunately, we were working alongside local partners we'd collaborated with before. They knew how we work, understood the level of detail we expect and helped us build a crew that could move quickly across multiple locations. Building the team wasn't the difficult part. The bigger challenge was gaining access to some of the locations we wanted to film in. Many of them were active heritage sites and major tourist attractions, so every permit came with layers of approvals, restrictions and timing considerations.

The Beautiful Locations In India

One location in particular nearly didn't happen the way we'd planned. Heavy flooding before the shoot had left parts of the stepwell covered in mould. The location still had incredible bones, but it wasn't camera ready. The solution was an overnight effort by the local team to restore and repaint sections of the steps before first light. It was one of those production decisions that feels slightly crazy at midnight and completely worth it when the sun comes up. By morning, it looked exactly as we'd imagined.

Panna Meena Ka Kund ended up becoming one of my favourite locations from the entire shoot. Standing at the top and looking down, you can see why it's one of Jaipur's most photographed landmarks. The repeating geometry of the steps, the symmetry and the connection to water felt completely aligned with the story we were telling. It has a stillness to it despite sitting in the middle of a busy city. Every angle offered something different.

Gatore Ki Chhatriyan, It's a royal cremation and memorial site, but what struck me most was how peaceful it felt. Away from the crowds, surrounded by carved sandstone pavilions and quiet gardens, it had a meditative quality that worked perfectly for the campaign. There was a calmness there that felt connected to the rituals and mindfulness at the heart of Ayurveda. It didn't feel like a location. It felt like a place people still came to reflect.

Bissau Palace brought something completely different. The palace is full of history, but it still feels lived in. Every room seemed to hold another photograph, artefact or reminder of the generations that had passed through it. After long shoot days we'd find ourselves wandering through hallways and courtyards taking it all in. It constantly reminded us that we were guests inside a place with a much longer story than our production.

And then there was Villa Palladio. Walking into it felt like stepping into a Wes Anderson film. The colours, patterns and attention to detail are unlike anywhere else. What made it special wasn't just the design, but the balance between old and new. It felt distinctly Indian while also being modern, playful and incredibly welcoming. The level of service was exceptional and it became one of those places the crew talked about long after the shoot had finished.

The Moment Nobody Planned For

Some of the most memorable moments happened outside the planned schedule. One morning, elephants casually appeared walking through the streets. Production stopped for a moment. Crew members who had worked all over the world pulled out their phones like tourists. Staying in places like Bissau Palace had a similar effect. Being surrounded by so much history while making a modern campaign created a contrast that none of us expected but everyone appreciated.

What Producing Here Teaches You

What I remember most isn't any single location. It's the feeling of moving through Rajasthan each day. The colour of the sandstone buildings at sunrise. The sound of traffic mixing with temple bells. The smell of spices drifting through the streets. The heat coming off the roads in the afternoon. The constant reminder that this wasn't a backlot or a recreated version of a place. It was real.

That's probably the biggest lesson this project reinforced for us. We work in an industry where technology can now create almost anything. References are generated instantly. Worlds can be built digitally. But there is still no substitute for being somewhere. For walking the streets, talking to local people, understanding the culture and discovering things you could never have planned for.

This shoot wasn't just about producing a campaign. It was a reminder of why we travel in the first place. The most authentic stories are still found out in the world, not behind a keyboard. Real places, real people and real experiences will always bring something that can't be generated, recreated or imagined from afar.
