Kiwi Mascot Awakens From Coma in Episodic Series From TBWA\NZ

The Warehouse's series was directed by Supernormal's Olivia McClymont, and accompanied by missing person posters and a hotline

The Warehouse has resurrected its long-lost Kiwi mascot after a 20-year absence, but rather than a quick social media stunt, TBWA\NZ has crafted a five-part episodic series unfolding like entertainment rather than advertising, complete with missing person posters and a hotline that generated more than 100 public tips.

In a social landscape where brands often chase the latest trend and content is becoming more and more ‘snackable’, TBWA\NZ took a disruptive approach -- reintroducing one of New Zealand's most loved brand icons through a five-part episodic series designed to unfold like entertainment rather than advertising.

The series sees The Warehouse's long-lost Kiwi mascot return after a mysterious 20-year absence, with a story that stretches across YouTube, TikTok and TVNZ+.

The campaign began with missing person posters throughout the country. A hotline generated more than 100 tips from the public. Reported sightings of a confused Kiwi in a hospital gown surfaced everywhere from Te Atatu to Dargaville.

Directed by Olivia McClymont from Supernormal, the five-part series follows as Kiwi awakens from a coma and attempts to navigate a very different New Zealand from the one they remember before finally making its way back home to The Warehouse.

Along the way, Kiwi encounters a cast of familiar local faces, including Mike McRoberts, Suzanne Paul, Harold the Giraffe, David Correos, Maria Williams, and Mai FM's Randy Sjafrie, each helping them find their place in modern Aotearoa.

But the series does more than simply bring back a mascot. Taking a deliberately fresh and disruptive approach to storytelling across digital, the campaign replaces conventional short-form branded content with an episodic narrative packed with nostalgia, humour and subtle nods to Kiwi culture.

Throughout the series, audiences will discover a range of hidden Easter eggs, from references to the Country Calendar theme and Suzanne Paul's iconic ‘luminous spheres’, through to a gentle tribute to the much-loved Goodnight Kiwi.

The campaign rewards repeat viewing and sparks conversation, while reconnecting New Zealanders with a character many remember fondly.

Shane Bradnick, TBWA\NZ CCO, said, “In a world where brands often use mascots as quick social content generators, we wanted something different. Bringing Kiwi back gave us the opportunity to create an entertainment-first story that people would genuinely want to follow episode by episode, while celebrating the cultural cues, characters and nostalgia that makes New Zealand unique.”

Mish Cockcroft, GM media management, The Warehouse Group, added, “The campaign also marks the first time The Warehouse has used a sequential media-buying approach, with social as the hero channel. By serving each chapter of Kiwi’s story in sequence, we’re able to build intrigue and create a more connected and compelling experience that keeps audiences coming back to see what happens next.”

The Warehouse Group's marketing GM Rachel Hitchock said, “Having Kiwi back where they belong feels incredibly special. For many New Zealanders, Kiwi is woven into their memories of The Warehouse, and this new chapter brings that nostalgia to life in a fresh and entertaining way. We’re excited to see where Kiwi’s journey takes them next.

Reports of Kiwi working as a DJ on The Mai FM Home Run, moonlighting as a security guard at Auckland Art Gallery and taking shifts as a road worker can now officially be confirmed through the series.

As for Kiwi themselves, they're still choosing their words carefully. Multiple interview requests were made, but the bird of the moment remained characteristically tight-beaked.

The five-part series is now live across YouTube, TikTok, and TVNZ+.
