Mayhem Returns in Jake Scott’s Chaotic Allstate Spots

Created in-house and produced by Ridley Scott Associates, the brand’s ‘Mayhem’ campaign is back with its sharply dressed force of comic disaster at the centre

Allstate’s long-running ‘Mayhem’ campaign is back, bringing fresh chaos with its suited and booted – and slightly threatening – mascot.

Created by the insurance brand’s in-house creative team and directed by Jake Scott via RSA Films, the trio of new spots sees actor Dean Winters reprise his personification of ‘Mayhem’ in several hilariously unfortunate scenarios.

In ‘Big Tree Branch’, Mayhem is positioned horizontally, high up in the air as a branch on a 200‑year‑old elm. He looks sturdy on the outside, but being dead internally, he eventually comes crashing down onto a front porch in explosive fashion.

As in all the ads, Mayhem simply laughs and dusts himself off, as the homeowner is left to deal with the damage – emphasising the importance of Allstate’s home insurance.

The ‘Mayhem’ campaign has always highlighted modern‑day vulnerabilities, and has kept up with new vulnerabilities as life has changed over the years. For example, as delivery robots become a more common sight on the streets, Allstate has included them in the world of ‘Mayhem’. In the spot ‘Delivery Robot’ Mayhem appears as a burrito‑delivering robot whose presence at a busy intersection creates confusion that leads to a collision.

The third film is designed to run during basketball season, drawing inspiration from the growing influence of fashion in professional sports. As a nod to this, the spot, ‘Star of Your Team’, presents Mayhem in customised clothing, portraying the agent of chaos as a star athlete making a stylish walk off a team bus. All the attention distracts a nearby fan, who ends up crashing his car, promoting the brand’s vehicle insurance.

Dean Winters first stepped into the character’s menacing shoes back in 2010, and these spots continue the campaign’s long-standing humorous approach, utilising the personification of ‘Mayhem’ to underscore the importance of preparedness in a confronting but funny way.
