‘That’s AI’ is the knee-jerk reaction right now to images of many-fingered hands. But James Kumar is the real deal, which is why Windhoek Beer has recruited him as their newest hand model.
In James, who was born with six fingers on each hand, Windhoek Beer has found a symbol of what it prides itself on representing: being genuine in a world of fakes. Like James, the beer brand prides itself on its no-nonsense authenticity, brewed for over 100 years according to the Reinheitsgebot purity law using only barley, hops, and water.

TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris teamed up with Windhoek Beer to make James the star of ‘The Real Guy’. The integrated campaign was developed collaboratively with James, ensuring his voice and perspective shaped the storytelling. Humorous and ironic while celebratory and sincere, a documentary film shares the polydactylic protagonist’s journey from his upbringing and community life to his first major brand collaboration as a content creator, including his first time leaving his home country of Kenya and his reflections on authenticity in a changing world. Produced with the team behind ‘Chasing the Sun’, the campaign rolls out across out-of-home, digital, social, and video platforms in South Africa.

The culturally driven platform challenges artificial perfection by celebrating real stories, and coincides with the brand formalising its ‘100% Real’ pledge not to use AI-generated imagery in any consumer-facing communications. All brand content will feature real people, real Windhoek Beer, and real-world production. This standard is embedded in contracts with all creative agency, production, and content partners.

“Authenticity has always been at the core of Windhoek,” said Keval Ramraj, marketing manager at Windhoek Beer South Africa. “As AI-generated content becomes more prevalent, we wanted to make a clear and intentional statement about what we stand for. Not artificial perfection. Not manufactured humanity. Real stories, real people, and real beer.”
The policy does not restrict responsible use of AI in internal processes such as strategy, ideation, planning, optimisation, or production support, provided final outputs comply with the authenticity standard. Heineken Beverages will enforce this across all Windhoek partners.
“This is not a rejection of technology,” said Keval. “AI has a role in modern business. But when it comes to how we represent people, culture, and our brand to consumers, authenticity matters more than ever.”
