Crisis Shows How Homes Can Be a Sanctuary to Dream In

Film from The Corner Shop director Peter Thwaites captures the safety, comfort and inspiration that a home can provide to people

Peter Thwaites' latest film sees him and The Corner Shop work with national homelessness charity Crisis for the new ‘Home of Dreams’ campaign which explores the idea of what home means and raises awareness of the record numbers of households experiencing homelessness across Britain.

The new film captures the safety, comfort and inspiration that a home can provide to people. In this instance we see what it can do for a young boy and his dream to be a footballer. Peter brilliantly evokes the powerful nature of imagination and the endless possibilities it can provide in a subtle and beautiful way. Peter makes the home feel like a character in itself, providing space for the boy to not only play in but to dream in.

Guy Mowbray adds his commentator voice-over to the boy’s imagination, and Michael Kiwanuka’s track 'Home Again' helps highlight the connection between home and dreams.

Peter says, “This is a film about home as a feeling. About what it means to belong somewhere, to feel safe, to let your mind wander into the future, brought to life through the eyes and imagination of a child. There are thousands of people in the UK tonight without a home, and I hope that this can help strike a chord."

This film was created to remind audiences of something many of us take for granted: that home is the foundation on which dreams are built. Whether those dreams are about family, education, work, sport or a brighter future; they all start with the security of having somewhere safe to call home. Through securing support from various partners such as but not limited to: football clubs, players governing bodies and corporate partners they hope the new film will reach a large audience of people through engagement and social media.

Crisis works tirelessly all year round to end homelessness. They provide practical, hands-on support – with everything from clothes to careers coaching – and, crucially, help get people into safe and affordable homes as quickly as possible. So, they can build a life. So they can dream again.

An estimated 5000 people will be sleeping on our streets, facing danger and isolation. From Peter and everyone at The Corner Shop we hope the new film shines a light on the important work that Crisis does to provide people with the safety and security that most of us often take for granted.
