The Monthly Cut Year-in-Review: The Brands, Agencies and Makers That Made the Cut the Most

The Year-in-Review series continues by spotlighting the companies behind the 120 featured projects, as adidas, Telstra, Apple and Nike emerge as the most featured brands

Over the course of its first year, The Monthly Cut gave a platform to 120 projects from all around the world. Behind each and every one of those projects were companies and teams that pushed the boundaries of creativity to bring to life incredible ideas with exceptional execution.

Having revealed the top scoring projects globally, as well as from Australia, the UK and the US, we now turn our attention to the brands, agencies and craft companies that made them. We explore which brands had multiple projects on show and shine a spotlight on the agencies, production, post production, edit and music and sound companies that made them.

There were almost 500 companies credited on projects that made The Monthly Cut. Any Little Black Book member company that made two or more appearances features in this piece, highlighting their ability to continually and consistently produce work that the creative council felt was a benchmark for our industry.

We also look at which agency networks were the strongest performers, as well as which countries had the most projects featured.

Adidas, Apple, Nike and Telstra are the most prolific brands

Exactly 100 brands were featured across the course of the 12 editions, with eleven of those managing to make the Cut on more than one occasion.

Of those eleven, four of the brands - adidas, Apple, Nike and Telstra - impressed the council on four separate occasions.

The others that featured multiple times are Channel 4 and Coinbase, both with a trio of appearances, whilst Claude, Tesco, Uber, Waitrose and Xbox all appeared twice.

Uncommon, Wieden+Kennedy, FCB and TBWA are most frequently appearing networks

For this feature, a network is defined as an agency with multiple offices - whether it’s holding company owned, part-owned or independently owned. We also include agency brands that have now retired but existed at the point of submission and inclusion on any of the respective reels.

It is unsurprising, considering its London outpost topped the individual office rankings, that Uncommon is the most frequently appearing network across the 12 reels, popping up on eight occasions.

Wieden+Kennedy closely follows, having been included on seven occasions: four projects coming from London, with one each from Amsterdam, Mexico and New York.

Appearing five times across the year are both FCB - which was retired as part of the Omnicom and IPG merger - and TBWA, which includes appearances for Chiat\Day LA, Heimat, Media Arts Lab and twice from Lucky Generals.

Publicis Groupe’s BBH and Saatchi & Saatchi both have four projects featured, as do Droga5 and Grey. A whole host of networks are included on a trio or pair of occasions.

France, Mexico and the Netherlands each had a trio of features, whilst Brazil, Germany, India, Ireland and New Zealand had two per country. Notably, a German project - Hornbach’s No Project Without Drama by Heimat\TBWA - was the third highest scoring project of the year globally.

There were solitary appearances for projects from Argentina, Belgium, Portugal, Thailand and South Africa.
