Hypnosis Leads Abstract, Playful Rebrand of Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre

"Our new brand identity captures the warmth and openness of the place — within the logo you might see letters or something else entirely: a paint stain on a studio floor, the energy of a live music crowd, or the shapes of Walyalup’s land and waterways"

Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre has unveiled a new visual identity designed to better reflect the diversity of art, music, and creativity that comes alive across the space every day.

The challenge was to create a brand that truly reflected what happens at the venue. Open, welcoming and accessible, Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre is a vibrant multi-arts hub where visual arts, live music, creative learning and community-focused cultural experiences thrive.

A place where people feel free to wander, pause, notice things, and let ideas take shape. Not a brand that tells people what to think, but one that gives them space to feel, reflect and create in their own way.

The new identity draws on the physical experience of being there. The way light moves across the buildings. The quiet moments between events. The feeling of time softening as you walk through the grounds. These qualities informed a system that feels open and yet expressive.

At the heart of the identity is a new logomark built from the letterforms of WFAC. It has been intentionally abstracted so it can be read as typography or simply experienced as form. The shapes echo the movement of shadows and the play of light, giving the mark a sense of motion without being busy.

A bespoke typeface, Freoarts Sans, balances confidence with softness. Its bold structure is paired with rounded edges and flowing curves, creating a tone that feels welcoming and expressive. With a warm colour palette and layouts that move away from rigid structure, the overall system highlights WFAC as a place to pause, to wonder, and to let creativity quietly wake. Custom characters add subtle movement when used, allowing designers to introduce energy without overwhelming the content.

Hypnosis ECD Guy Patrick said the focus was on capturing how you feel when you step inside the centre.

“When you walk through the gate of WFAC, the world loosens its grip," he said.

"What replaces it is a measured calm. Dappled light, cool air, and architectural quiet offer both refuge and readiness. It’s an escape from the outside world and a preparation to encounter ideas and creativity with openness. Our ambition was to bring this to life in for the rebrand.”

Hypnosis MD Amber Martin added the new identity was about making creativity more accessible.

“The Arts Centre is not just for artists or insiders," she said.

"It is for everyone. The new identity reflects that. It is warm, open and intentionally spacious, so people can bring their own meaning, ideas, and experiences into it.”

Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre audience and engagement lead, Prudence Riley, said the rebrand beautifully captured the spirit of the place.

“Hypnosis has delivered a beautiful design that cleverly embodies the many faces of Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre," Prudence said.

"Our new brand identity captures the warmth and openness of the place — within the logo you might see letters or something else entirely: a paint stain on a studio floor, the energy of a live music crowd, or the shapes of Walyalup’s land and waterways. It’s a brand that leaves room for personal meaning, just as the Centre itself does.”

The result is an identity that mirrors the experience of the centre itself. Calm, open and full of creative possibilities. A place to reflect, to wonder, and to begin.
