Enterogermina Plots Probiotic Heist Blockbuster to Steal Back Trust from Rivals

The Opella brand partnered with the screenwriter from ‘La Casa de Papel’ (‘Money Heist’) and a notorious ex-jewel thief to transform a scientific differentiator into an entertainment-led brand narrative for campaign from BBDO Spain

In a bold departure from category norms, probiotic brand Enterogermina is betting on Hollywood-style storytelling to solve a complex marketing challenge: how to communicate an invisible product advantage in a market saturated with imitations. The brand's new global campaign, ‘Mother Cell Heist’ was built to tackle rising consumer skepticism head-on by dramatising the superiority of its original, scientifically-proven Intelli-spores™ formulation.

The strategic pivot comes as consumers face a confusing abundance of choice from the probiotics category, fueled by a flood of less-effective "follower brands" that are eroding consumer trust. Opella brand and world number one in probiotics, Enterogermina, chose to build a compelling brand narrative. The campaign centres on the brand’s most valuable asset: its original "mother cell*" from 1958. This is the source of its proprietary formulation (blending four original strains of Bacillus clausii - Intelli-spores™ - a spore-forming type of bacteria with a protective, adaptive shell that allows the bacteria to survive 100%), a closely guarded trade secret perfected over almost 70 years.

To bring this narrative to life, the agency, a collaboration between MRM and BBDO, issued a creative provocation: what would it take to steal this priceless formula? The answer: commissioning Larry Lawton, one of America’s most famous former jewel thieves, to develop a theoretical heist plan. This high-concept premise was then handed to a creative team that included a screenwriter from the global hit series ’La Casa de Papel’, resulting in an eight-minute cinematic film.

The film serves as the campaign's anchor, transforming a key product proof-point - that it takes 53 vials of a typical imitation to equal the benefit of one Enterogermina - into a story of immense, protected value.

“Interest in probiotics continues to rise, but for most people the category is still confusing and difficult to trust. So we did something simple. We set out to earn people’s attention by focusing on what makes Enterogermina truly different: its original mother cell, held under lock and key in Italy. We brought it to life in a cinematic way with a high-stakes heist, giving people a story they actually want to watch,” said Alberto Hernandez, chief growth officer, Opella.

“We didn’t want to create just another ad. We wanted to tell a story about superiority and make it genuinely compelling. So we developed a real-life heist plan, worked with a former professional thief and collaborated with a Money Heist screenwriter to transform a scientific foundation into a story so engaging people won’t be able to look away for a single second. It takes a brave client like Opella-Enterogermina to bring ideas like this to life,” said Felix del Valle, Opella's Global Hub creative lead.

The campaign represents a strategic shift towards content-as-marketing, designed to generate cultural relevance and conversation beyond the health and wellness space. ‘The Mother Cell Heist’ film launched on the History Channel followed by supporting assets across digital and social channels, signaling a new chapter in science-based brand storytelling.
