Unfettered Summit Launches to Champion Independent Creative Advertising Agencies

The inaugural summit will harness a pivotal moment for independent creative agencies to grow, innovate, and define their future

Venables Bell + Partners, The Ad Club of New York, Rick Boyko, and Kempner Communications have launched Unfettered: The Independent Creative Agency Summit, a new event bringing together independent creative agency leaders, brand executives, emerging talent, trade press, and tech innovators. The inaugural event takes place in New York City on March 2–3. Unfettered will tackle the key challenges and opportunities shaping the independent agency landscape.

“Independent agencies are at a defining moment. As holding company consolidation accelerates, private equity pressures creativity, and AI transforms the industry, these changes can be challenging—but true independents thrive in these conditions,” said Gina Grillo, president and CEO of The Ad Club of New York. “Unfettered brings together leaders who have the freedom and conviction to openly discuss the challenges and possibilities ahead.”

Unfettered is designed to spark real conversations and share practical insights across the independent creative agency community. Participating agencies, including JOAN, Erich & Kallman, COLLINS, Mojo Supermarket, Quality Meats, Amusement Park Entertainment, Oberland, Angry Gods, Tombras, Tool, Rethink, and Ad Legends, will contribute to a programme that emphasises candid dialogue and actionable advice.

The summit opens March 2 with kickoff cocktails at The Ad Club of New York, followed on March 3 by a full-day programme at Meta NYC. The programme will be led by Paul Venables, founder and chairman of Venables Bell + Partners, as the agency celebrates its 25 years of independence this year. 

“I’ve been running an independent agency for 25 years, and have faced enough shifts and pressures to know this business is never easy,” said Paul Venables, founder and chairman of Venables Bell + Partners. “But every challenge carries opportunity. And what we face now is ushering in the Age of Independents. Nimble, senior, strategic, and creative SWAT teams—equipped with AI skills—are the answer to what our industry faces now. I’m energised to get together and share what’s next with like-minded Indies from across the country."

Sessions will explore real tensions and opportunities facing independent creative agencies, including founder decisions around growth and ownership, evolving client expectations, strategies for investing in creativity under economic pressure, approaches to PR and visibility, and ways independents can leverage AI as a practical competitive advantage.
