Talking Squirrel Sparks an Awakening in Canva Campaign

Quality Meats campaign shows how Canva is a creative partner that turns any idea into something transformative

Visual communication platform Canva has launched brand platform, 'The Thing That Makes Anything A Thing,' built on the belief that even the simplest idea can become a thing with the right creative tools.

The work centres on a simple truth: when something looks real, it has the power to make an impact. With the tools to bring it to life, even a tiny spark can become shareable and catch on as a movement.

Developed in partnership with leading creative agency Quality Meats, the platform takes aim at a world where ideas are everywhere, but bringing them to life still feels out of reach. Canva flips that dynamic, making it faster, easier, and more fun than ever to create and share ideas, all in one place. And with Canva AI 2.0, it’s becoming a more conversational, agentic platform where work gets done.

“At any given moment, there are hundreds of ideas stuck in people’s heads, but they never see the light of day - not because they aren’t good, but because not everyone has the tools to bring them to life,” said Kristine Segrist, Canva’s global head of consumer marketing. “With Canva, we want to empower anyone to take an idea from a spark and turn it into something the world can see, share, and engage with, even if it starts as something a little unexpected.”

The campaign launched last week with the mysterious appearance of a squirrel statue in Brooklyn Bridge Park in New York, from April 30th to May 2nd - with no explanation or visible connection to the brand. Instead, it appeared to be led by a squirrel-obsessed movement known as 'The Squirrelites'.

Surrounding the statue, a series of subtle, squirrel-themed activations unfolded, from knitting circles crafting acorn hats to squirrel choir serenades and balloon vendors selling squirrel-shaped balloons. Teasers fuelled intrigue around the Squirrelites, spanning wild postings, OOH, social, and influencer content. Together, these moments created a wave of curiosity online, as people began to notice and ask: What is with this squirrel?

Canva revealed it was the brand behind the stunt, rolling out an anthem film and a series of shorter ads that show how the wildest ideas can take shape in daily life. The hero film follows a woman whose chance encounter with a squirrel spirals into a squirrel-obsessed movement. What begins as a moment of inspiration quickly expands into posters, social posts, swag, and eventually a devoted community of followers.

In each case, Canva is positioned as the tool that makes anything a thing, even in life’s smallest, most unexpected moments. Directed by Ulf Johansson of Smith & Jones Films, the campaign leans into a distinctive visual and storytelling style that blurs the line between sincerity and satire. A squirrel sparks a fervent awakening. A movement forms overnight. People wear acorn hats and gather in parks. It’s absurd. It’s emotional. It’s strangely plausible. And that’s the point.

“Starting a squirrel-praising movement isn’t necessarily a great idea,” says Gordy Sang, co-founder and co-chief creative officer at Quality Meats. “But presented thoughtfully and tastefully thanks to Canva, even the notion that squirrels-possess-some-sort-of-higher-power can seem instantly more legitimate, and ultimately kind of plausible. It does help that squirrels are pretty cute.”

The rollout spans experiential, social, influencer, OOH, digital, and audio channels, and is intended to be Canva’s North American platform long-term. With 'The Thing That Makes Anything A Thing' as its unifying idea, Canva positions itself not just as a design tool, but as an all-in-one creative partner that turns bold ideas into results.

Whether it’s a business, side hustle, passion project, or weird movement extolling the virtues of squirrels… if it’s made on Canva, it might just become a thing.
