Specsavers is insuring the eyes of darts sensation Beau Greaves for £1 million after the star claimed a record third Women's World Matchplay title.
The announcement comes as new research reveals a striking contradiction in how we think about our eyesight. While almost eight in 10 people (78%) recognise good eyesight is vital for sporting performance and 93% say it's important for reaction time and coordination, nearly half (49%) would prioritise replacing a broken phone over booking a health appointment such as an eye test. Alarmingly, just 61% say protecting their health, including their eyesight, is more important than protecting their physical possessions.
And few sports demonstrate the importance of vision better than darts, where matches are won and lost by millimetres. Just hours after producing another masterclass in precision to beat Fallon Sherrock 6-5 in the Women's World Matchplay final at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, Beau has become the latest star to insure the asset most critical to her success.
After Fallon forced the match to a deciding leg, the 22-year-old held her nerve with a crucial 180 before a brilliant 145 setup left her needing 56 for the title. She coolly pinned double 10 to seal a record-breaking third consecutive Women's World Matchplay crown.
The latest triumph adds to an extraordinary year for Beau. Earlier this year, she became the first woman ever to win a PDC ranking title, defeating former world champion Michael Smith at Players Championship 11. She also hit a nine-darter on the PDC circuit and became the first woman to qualify for the European Tour.
Despite recognising the importance of good vision, many people are still failing to prioritise it, with only 63% saying they have regular eye tests every two years or more.
By insuring Beau Greaves' eyes, Specsavers is shining a spotlight on the often-overlooked role vision plays at the highest level of sport, while encouraging the public to rethink how they protect their own eyesight.
Beau Greaves said, "I'm really proud to have won the Women's World Matchplay for a third time. It was a tough final and matches like that come down to the finest of margins. In darts, having clear, reliable vision is a huge part of performing at your best. Partnering with Specsavers feels like a natural fit because my eyesight is such a big part of my game, so it makes sense to protect it."
Neil Liddle, brand partnerships and sponsorships Lead at Specsavers, said, "Beau continues to break barriers and rewrite what's possible in darts. Winning the Women's World Matchplay for a record third consecutive year is another remarkable achievement and highlights the incredible level of precision required at the very top of the sport. When you're aiming for targets just millimetres wide, your eyesight isn't just important – it's everything. Yet while people recognise the importance of good vision, many are still putting other priorities ahead of looking after their eyes. By insuring Beau's eyes, we want to remind everyone – not just elite athletes – to value and protect their vision by making regular eye tests a priority."
