We’ve all heard the same tired narrative. PR is dead. Earned media is dying. You can’t prove PR works; it’s only about the clicks.
That was never true, but, as an industry, we’ve struggled with measurable proof points, industry standards, and direct trackability.
Now, AI steers how people gather information and decide what to trust, proving PR as the system that defines relevance.
AI as a tool can create efficiencies, but that’s table stakes. The bigger story lies in AI as the front door to information. PR decides what gets said once you walk through that door.
AI summaries shortcut clicks and have quickly come to carry more importance than search results. As Search Engine Journal recently reported, an April 2026 study shows up to 72% of Google searches end with no click if an AI Overview summary is provided.
Those answers provided are based on the authority, credibility, and consistency that is driven by strategic PR – thought leadership, strong messaging, and thorough sourcing verified by authentic, credible third-party partnerships and endorsements.
As the latest report by MuckRack "What is AI Reading” (May 2026) shows, 99% of links cited by AI are from non-paid media sources, including journalist content, corporate blogs, owned channels, aggregators, government and NGO sites - the areas where PR makes its impact.
To help us all make the shift to embracing AI as the gatekeeper, we need to change the dialogue and standard of success. We should no longer ask: “Did we get coverage?” because AI is asking: “What about this brand or company is credible enough to cite or quote?”
We need to ask and continually assess whether we are driving the answers people receive or are absent from them. And if you don’t know, you need to find out.
If you are not part of the answer, your competitor likely is. If there is a gap in credible information, figure out how to fill it. And if the answer being provided is wrong, you need to get to work to correct it through AI optimisation strategies like data source hubs, white paper style content, FAQ easy references and more.
Every communications leader needs to get comfortable with the notion of PR as signal architecture rather than content. Everything the brand or organisation puts into the world signals the AI machine that tells people about your brand. PR creates many of those signal pathways and keeps them strong and fresh.
Look at media coverage as a credibility signal, executive or third-party commentary as an authority signal, message consistency with proof points as a trust signal, and frequent and refreshed information dissemination as the relevance signal.
All those signals tell AI with loud sirens and blinking red lights that this is information to include, and, in an AI-world, inclusion is everything.
Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the new search engine optimisation (SEO), and PR is the crucial input. At LCPR, we just completed a GEO audit for a national CPG brand that has defined the go-forward PR strategy. The results answered whether the brand was relevant enough to quote, identified information gaps the brand could authentically fill, tiered our media targets to those that most influence answers, and prioritised third parties that held weight to steer the brand’s smart collaborations and partnerships. The audit led to measurable areas for improvement and ongoing optimisation.
PR pros have always understood the importance of building reputation, authority, and credibility. Now, AI has arrived to prove it by prioritising the exact metrics PR delivers, making our work foundational to how people seek and use information.
This is a pretty cool moment for us, fellow PR pros. We are not just shaping narratives; we are shaping information systems.
