For decades, the glowing New York Lottery sign hanging outside bodegas, delis, gas stations, and corner stores has represented possibility. It's been a beacon for millions of New Yorkers imagining what could be.
But recently, New York only has one dream. The New York Knicks winning the Championship.
In an unprecedented state wide show of support, the New York Lottery partnered with McCann New York to ask its network of more than 13,000 retailers to temporarily turn off their iconic neon Lottery signs, giving space to the dream currently occupying the entire city.
The effort came as New York rallied behind the Knicks' first finals appearance in more than two decades.
Normally, The New York Lottery’s goal is to keep New Yorkers dreaming. But when an entire state is united behind another dream, sometimes the best thing you can do is step aside and let it shine.
As retailers switched off their signs across New York, the New York Lottery documented the growing movement, capturing the symbolic darkening of thousands of storefronts in support of the team. The footage has been turned into a social film launching across New York, accompanied by digital placements on LinkNYC screens throughout the city.
The activation transformed one of New York's most familiar pieces of everyday advertising into a show of civic pride. For a brand built around dreams and possibility, it is a rare moment of choosing not to be the centre of attention.
Britt Nolan, chief creative officer, North America, McCann NY said, “New York Lottery signs have been part of the fabric of New York for decades, but right now there's something even bigger capturing the state's attention. We loved the idea of temporarily dimming one of New York's most recognisable symbols to reflect what so many New Yorkers are feeling: for this moment, there's only one dream that matters. It's a simple gesture, but one that shows how deeply sports can unite communities across the state. Let’s go Knicks!”
From neighbourhood bodegas in Brooklyn and the Bronx to convenience stores, delis, and retailers across the state, participating businesses helped create a visible expression of what New Yorkers felt: that some moments are bigger than any jackpot.
The New York Lottery's message is simple:
This dream can wait.
Go Knicks.
