KFC has welcomed the gen-z ‘treat yourself’ culture with a new campaign bringing the ‘Bucket for One’ to Germany.
For this, creative agency Butter and production company Soup Film collaborated with rapper Calli and director Tatjana Wenig, contributing an exclusive song and music video.
The campaign is specifically aimed at gen-z consumers, who are showing an increasing need to celebrate the small moments and enjoy food – according to a Bank of America report from late July, 57% buy themselves a small treat at least once a week.
Philipp Wachholz, chief marketing officer (CMO) at KFC Germany, said, "We are currently seeing a strong need for individuality and small, personal breaks among generation z. The 'Bucket for One' aims to be exactly that: a small moment of enjoyment that feels like a break just for me – whether during lunch, after university, or just in between. That’s what KFC stands for – and now also in the solo bucket.”
The spot is filmed in the style of the beloved ‘Dinner for One’ TV skit, well-known in Germany as a New Year's must-watch, with a KFC and Calli twist.
The agency Butter came up with the initial campaign idea. Aissu Diallo, managing director and owner of BUTTER.Social, said, "With our interpretation of 'Dinner for One', we reference a cult film in which self-indulgence is presented in an iconic way at the centre. By combining the classic with the new KFC product and Calli as a talent, we create a link between cultural relevance and modernity and simultaneously position the ‘Bucket for One’ as a symbol of me-time.”
German rapper Calli, who has been gaining traction among gen-z audiences on socials, wrote the original song for the campaign. Her lyrics blend her independent nature with her love of KFC: “I just want you to know I won’t share two things: that’s you and my fries.”
CMO Philipp said, “We are very pleased to have gained an authentic brand ambassador from a highly relevant target group in Calli. She embodies a modern self-confidence with her relaxed attitude and style, which we, as a brand, greatly appreciate.”
Calli commented, "KFC has always been my thing, I just love it. When I heard the idea, it was immediately clear: Yeah, this is a great idea. The bucket with the crunchy chicken is a classic anyway, and now with this remix, perfect. Only the best for my sisters and brothers."
Having previously worked with many well-known artists such as Shirin David, Luciano, and Badmomzjay, Tatjana directed Calli on a specially built dinner set, between a bucket and fries instead of candelabras and silverware. The rapper’s style not only had an impact musically – other details in the set design, like KFC Nails or KFC Jerseys, also reflect her signature look. Another detail in the clip is the KFC Black Card Calli holdsmarking Calli as the first person in Germany to receive the ticket to free unlimited KFC food.
