Fujifilm and McCann Talk Reframing What Makes a Photo Worth Keeping for instax mini 13

McCann New York’s global campaign for the instax mini 13 turns a self-timer feature into a story about friendship, surprise and the beauty of an imperfect shot – LBB’s Tará McKerr catches up with the brand and agency to find out more

For a generation raised on phone camera rolls, front-facing screens, and an infinite number of retakes, the appeal of instant photography lies somewhat in its novelty. There’s no edit button, no swipe through near-identical frames, no immediate chance to workshop the perfect angle. You just press the shutter, wait, and see what happens.

The small surrender of control is at the centre of Fujifilm instax’s new global campaign, ‘Time for the Unexpected’, created by the brand's global agency of record, McCann New York, to launch the instax mini 13.

The work introduces the camera’s new self-time feature by resisting the obvious promise of more technical control, but instead of positioning the function as a route to the perfect shot, it treats the countdown as the moment the real picture begins. Friends giggle, laugh, move, react, and derail the pose, with the final instant print becoming a record of the bits that weren’t planned.

For McCann VP creative directors Lindsey Aquino and Haley Cole, the creative starting point came from the character of the camera itself.

“The instax mini 13 is a fun, youthful camera,” they say. “We let that inspire the concept of the spot, and the execution as well. Not only using the vibrancy of colour, but also of vibie, to make a playful film that feels true to gen z.”

Directed by Roman Rütten through 1stAveMachine, the hero film follows three friends through bowling, mini-golf, make-up, and eventually a surprise birthday party. “We chose scenarios that could easily be everyday activities, where using a camera with a self-timer would be beneficial,” say Lindsey and Haley.

“And each scene works on its own, but we love the idea that in the end, the story comes together like a thoughtful scheme to get one of the friends out of the house for a surprise birthday party.”

While the sequences give the self-timer a practical job, the story itself is built around the looseness it creates in that space. When the camera is placed down and the countdown starts, the group fills the gap with friendship’s signature chaos.

From Fujifilm’s perspective, this was the point of the function. “The 10s self-timer feature easily allows users to take hands-free, full-body group shot selfies,” says the brand, speaking with LBB. “Users can bring everyone into the photo and play around with distance, poses, and angles.” All of this works to allow users to capture “authentic, unexpected moments as tangible print memories worth holding onto.”

When it came to making something authentic enough for eagle-eyed gen z’ers, the chemistry of the local castings was central. The creatives say, “The best moments in the campaign are the ones that feel like the actors didn’t even know the camera was on them.”

They also credit Roman for making the outcome what it was, noting that he treated the camera as if it were another character in the story, an active part of the friend group. “The one who’s there to capture the moments you didn’t even intend to, but that you never want to forget.”

In a visual culture trained to check, retake, and correct, ‘Time for the Unexpected' is making a bit of room for the kind of photos people keep because they capture something real, not perfect.
