American Haiku has acquired Basement Freaks, the clandestine creative collective known for operating in shadows, basements, and occasionally shared Google Docs, for an undisclosed sum.
Neither party would comment on the terms of the deal. However, sources familiar with the matter suggest the acquisition represents one of the highest multiples ever paid for an anonymous underground collective.
Basement Freaks emerged earlier this year as an uncredited force behind Mozilla’s 'Choose Your Future' campaign – a series of films and interventions questioning authorship, power, and inevitability in contemporary technology. The group drew attention for its refusal to claim individual credit for the work, its deliberately opaque operating model, and its rejection of traditional agency structures and norms.
American Haiku declined to clarify whether Basement Freaks will be formally integrated into the agency. Sources close to “The Freaks” indicate they will continue operating independently.
