Laut gegen Nazis is THE antifascist organisation in Germany – actively opposing right-wing extremism and strengthening civil resistance for almost two decades. Their HetzJaeger project activated two very different groups of people with one powerful idea. First, we drew the attention of the whole German neonazi scene with a short teaser song. And next, we stirred public outrage with the revelation of the entire track and video, causing citizens and the press to demand stronger regulations to rid streaming platforms of this kind of ideology. Laut gegen Nazis sensitised people and activated them into forcing the services to take action.
To remind the platforms of their duty of care and prove how they are spreading fascist ideology, we cleverly used their algorithms to spread an antifascist song in the German neonazi community. We perfectly tailored the band and teaser song to the primary parameters algorithms use to decide which bands they recommend to which users. That’s how we created the perfect trojan Nazi-Rock band. One month later, the algorithms recommended our teaser to most of the German fascist scene. And then, we finally released the full song on the anniversary of Hitler’s seizure of power – revealing its true nature. Which turned into thousands of loud and angry nazis on social media and an even louder public outcry filled with demands for more regulation on the streaming platforms. And now,
the platforms finally start to act: over 700 fascist songs and bands have already been removed.
