Savanna Cider Brings South Africans Great and Small Outside for Summer

‘South Ahh, We Outside!’ features creative from TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris and direction from Darling Films South Africa’s Zee Ntuli

Savanna cider and TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris have launched a sun-soaked campaign embracing the summertime: ‘South Ahh, We Outside!’.

Directed by Darling Films South Africa’s Zee Ntuli, the playful film departs from the Savanna’s traditional bar setting, taking the convenient new 500ml can out for a spin in the great outdoors after a winter cooped up inside. “We outsiiiiide,” a group cheers – but in a witty twist, so does the rest of the food chain. Feasting their eyes on the friends, two mosquitos celebrate for the same reason, watched in turn by two salivating chameleons.

TBWA\Hunt Lascaris ECD, Steph Van Niekerk, commented on the campaign, “Savanna Cider is an iconic South African brand with a rich history of great work. It’s known for its signature wit and sharp observations of South African life. Working on it is a great honour but also comes with great responsibility as people expect a lot of the brand. It has to be fresh. It has to be funny. When the 500ml can brief came along, we knew it was our chance to try something a little different, whilst staying true to the personality of the brand."

Director Zee Ntuli said, "For this spot we knew the humour would only land if the rhythm was perfect, so a huge amount of prep went into the sound design and edit. We essentially had to compose the piece before even shooting it, treating the lines and beats almost like music. The biggest challenge was then pairing that rhythm with the visuals —striking the right balance between realism and anthropomorphism in the mozzies and chameleons so they felt part of the composition. It was a tricky puzzle, but a really fun new experience."

To launch the new format, Savanna is calling all certified OutCiders to join the #SavannaWeOutside movement and post their ‘We Outside’ moment to be in with a chance at R100,000 worth of prizes – or, better yet, a golden ticket to Camp Savivi, Savanna’s first-of-its-kind glamping experience. South Africans are encouraged to keep their eyes on @SavannaCider socials for surprise pop-ups, limited-edition swag, and laugh-out-loud content from Mzansi’s sharpest minds.
