Last week in Johannesburg, South Africa, I worked with One Groove on a songwriting camp that brought together six artists, three South African and three Danish, across two studios, resulting in six tracks in just a few days. Johannesburg is one of those places that immediately gets under your skin. It is vibrant, vibrating, and deep in spirit. The talent there is extraordinary, but it’s the people and their humility that create such a fertile environment for making music. What also mattered was who was in the room there: female-identifying producers in both studios throughout the camp, a majority female group of participants, multiple languages and language groups and a clear spotlight on South African artists who remain under-represented in the global music industry. This playlist feels like something important to pass on from my short time. It’s a glimpse, all but a postcard, but one I don’t believe any algorithm would ever surface on its own. Listen closely.
