OpenAI has appointed Julia Hoffmann and Andrew McKechnie to newly created senior creative leadership roles, as the company continues to build out its global creative function following a run of high-profile brand activity.
The hires come shortly after the launch of ChatGPT’s first large-scale brand campaign, developed in collaboration with Isle of Any, which took a human-first approach to showcase how people use the product in everyday contexts to learn, create and work. Earlier this year, OpenAI also made its Super Bowl debut during Super Bowl LVIX, marking its most prominent cultural moment to date.
Julia, formerly executive creative director, Creative Lab EMEA at Google, joins as head of international creative, overseeing international brand expression and creative execution across campaigns, experiences and regional markets as OpenAI expands globally. Andrew takes on the role of head of business creative, leading creative strategy and development across OpenAI’s Developer, Startups and Enterprise teams. Previously, he was the first head of marketing at AIRCO.
Both roles sit within OpenAI’s growing global creative organisation under Michael Tabtabai, who joined the company earlier this year as VP, global creative.
The appointments come as OpenAI continues to scale rapidly. More than 800 million people now use ChatGPT weekly, while over one million businesses are directly using OpenAI’s technology worldwide.
At Google, Julia led a global creative team and worked closely with international brand partners to develop and scale creative across multiple markets. Andrew brings senior creative leadership experience from Apple and other frontier technology companies, most recently AIRCO, where he focused on translating complex technologies into accessible, design-led platforms.
“Andrew and Julia are exceptional creative leaders who bring incredible creative pedigree and deep category experience to our global creative studio,” said Michael. “As we grow our business categories, quality of craft and creative clarity remain essential. Their leadership will strengthen our work and inform how OpenAI engages with developers, enterprises and our global community of ChatGPT users.”
Julia said the international remit was central to OpenAI’s next phase of growth. “Global adoption requires a creative foundation that respects context and culture,” she said. “Establishing international capabilities with creativity at the centre ensures OpenAI shows up with intention and depth as we expand into new regions.”
Andrew added that creativity plays a critical role in shaping how emerging technologies are understood and adopted. “Exceptional design and storytelling bring humanity and relevance, making emerging innovation feel inevitable rather than intimidating,” he said. “Building new creative capabilities across the enterprise and developer ecosystem allows us to shape that understanding from the ground up.”
