Over the years, we have worked with the most important clients and production companies around the world. We have shot many Lions - winning commercials, and have worked in the most diverse landscapes and conditions.
From our offices in Rio de Janeiro and Florianópolis, we not only provide production services for commercials, TV and feature films, but we also develop our own content, having produced documentaries and TV shows that have been aired in all of the Americas and Europe.
Ocean Films> Lençóis Maranhenses in Brazil is a unique geological phenomenon - the world's only extensive dune field with lagoons formed by rainwater. The landscape is in constant flux, sculpted by the wind. This dynamic environment means every shot is original, offering a rich and ever-changing palette of shapes and textures.
For productions seeking an otherworldly, almost surreal setting, there is simply no place on Earth like it. The vast, stark white dunes and the brilliant blue-green lagoons create a powerful, minimalist aesthetic that works beautifully for high-end fashion, automotive campaigns, or any project that requires a striking, memorable backdrop. This unique status was recently cemented when the national park was officially named a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in July 2024, highlighting its exceptional beauty and universal value.

Ocean Films> Our region boasts an incredible diversity of biomes. Beyond the iconic dunes and crystal-clear lagoons, we have lush mangroves, unique coastal vegetation, and complex river systems. The rich biodiversity provides opportunities for filming adaptable fauna and for capturing breath taking birdwatching scenes, such as the famous 'Revoada dos Guarás.' The coastline features wide, long stretches of isolated beaches, while the region is also home to vibrant, traditional communities of fishermen.
Ocean Films> Lençóis Maranhenses National Park: This is the heart of the region. The 155,000 hectares of majestic sand dunes mixed with seasonal lagoons create an ever-shifting landscape that is unlike anywhere else in the world. As of July 2024, the park is officially a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.
Barreirinhas: The main gateway to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, this town is the most developed and bustling hub. It’s the primary point of access for crew and equipment, offering the most comprehensive infrastructure.
Santo Amaro: Considered the 'hidden gem' of the region, Santo Amaro offers a more authentic and less-crowded experience. It’s geographically closer to some of the most stunning and secluded lagoons and dunes, providing a unique sense of intimacy with the landscape.
Atins: A small, rustic fishing village located where the Preguiças River meets the Atlantic Ocean. It’s renowned for its excellent kite-surfing conditions, providing a perfect backdrop for dynamic sports or lifestyle shoots.
São Luís do Maranhão: As the city with the international airport, São Luís is the logistical starting point for many productions. It’s a city of profound historical and cultural significance, defined by a unique fusion of European, African, and Indigenous influences. Its Historic Centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city’s passionate connection to reggae music has earned it the nickname 'the Brazilian Jamaica.'

Ocean Films> Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, with its gateways Barreirinhas and Atins, are the most popular and sought-after locations for film productions. They offer the quintessential visual identity of the region.
Ocean Films> The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park itself is the biggest attribute. The sheer scale of this unique sand extension and the mix of dunes and lagoons makes it an unparalleled asset. Its unique beauty is equally captivating whether filmed from the ground or from the air.

Ocean Films> The climate of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is tropical, with consistently high temperatures year-round (26°C to 28.5°C). The year is divided into two distinct seasons that dramatically affect the landscape: the rainy season and the dry season.
Peak Lagoon Season (June - August): This is the ideal time for productions seeking the iconic, otherworldly landscape with full, vibrant lagoons. The rains have subsided, the sun is shining, and the lagoons are at their peak.
Peak Dry Season (October - December): The intense sun and wind cause most of the seasonal lagoons to dry up. Only a few permanent lagoons remain, which can limit creative options and require more strategic planning for water-related shots.
Ocean Films> A permit from a local environmental bureau is required and typically takes around 10 business days to secure. Visas are required for some passport holders, such as Americans, Canadians, and Australians. Most Europeans do not require Visas for shooting in Brazil. Our team handles all permitting to ensure a smooth and compliant process.

Ocean Films> The region is not equipped with studios or high-end technical rental houses. All high-level cameras and other specialised equipment must be brought in from major cities like São Paulo. However, our expertise as a local production service company allows us to fully support large productions. We have established relationships with skilled local crews and can manage all logistics, from casting and sourcing local talent to securing specialised vehicles and on-the-ground support.
Ocean Films> One of our most successful and challenging projects was a high-end commercial for a South Korean client, working with the agency Inocean and the production company Planit. The project was a massive logistical undertaking. We had to transport all equipment, including a helicopter and two drones, from São Paulo and São Luís directly into the dunes using a fleet of 4x4s. The entire production was a masterclass in collaboration, with our team working alongside Twenty Four Seven, local crew from São Luís, ICMBio, and the Santo Amaro tour guides. The result was a visually stunning campaign that truly captured the epic scale of the location.
Ocean Films> DO respect the local environment and its people. This is a protected area and home to traditional communities. Follow the guidance of the local guides and ICMBio.
DO embrace the unexpected. The weather and landscape can change quickly. Flexibility is key to success.
DON'T underestimate the climate. The heat and strong winds are constant. Hydrate frequently and protect your equipment from the fine sand.
DON'T try to navigate the dunes on your own. The guides are not just for tours; they are essential for safely moving equipment and crew.
Ocean Films> My number one tip is to hire an experienced local production service company. The unique conditions and logistical challenges of the Lençóis Maranhenses require on-the-ground expertise to ensure a successful and efficient shoot.

Ocean Films> In Barreirinhas, a great option is the Porto Preguiças Resort, which offers good infrastructure and comfort. In Santo Amaro, we recommend local guesthouses like Pousada Santo Amaro for a more authentic and immersive experience.
Ocean Films> For a local culinary experience in Barreirinhas, try A Canoa. In Santo Amaro, a hidden gem is O Zé Pescador, a rustic eatery serving the freshest fish.

Ocean Films> Beyond the iconic dunes and lagoons, you can explore the Preguiças River by speedboat, visiting the villages of Mandacaru, Vassouras, and Caburé. For a breathtaking experience, witness the 'Revoada dos Guarás,' where hundreds of red ibis birds return to their roosts at sunset.
